Vienna remains the best city to live in for the third year, according to the Economist. Dublin dropped to 39th place. Copenhagen and Zurich came second and third. Melbourne and Calgary rounded out the top five.
Tel Aviv fell 20 spots due to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Western Europe is still the best region to live in, but protests over far-right ideas, farming rules, and immigration have caused problems.
Vienna got top marks for safety, healthcare, schools, and city services. Overall, cities became slightly better to live in last year. However, wars, unrest, and housing problems are still issues. Damascus in Syria is still the worst city to live in, while Kyiv in Ukraine remains in the bottom ten due to the ongoing war with Russia.
Garda arrested nine people in Dublin yesterday for their suspected involvement in last November's riots. They searched ten places and caught eight men and one woman. These arrests bring the total to 49 so far.
The riots on November 23, 2023, caused a lot of damage. People set fire to cars, buses, and a tram. They also broke into shops and stole things.
Some people have already been charged and are facing trial. The police are still investigating and may make more arrests.
Sinn Féin is proposing a new immigration policy. They want to check local services like healthcare, housing, and schools before placing asylum seekers in a community. This plan aims to address concerns about the impact on local resources.
The party also suggests ending the current system where Ukrainian refugees receive better treatment than other asylum seekers. Party leader Mary Lou McDonald will present this policy, called "A Fair System that Works," in Dublin.
This move comes as Sinn Féin tries to regain support from some traditional voters who was unhappy with their previous stance on immigration. The party promises to implement these changes if they form the next government.
INTERESTING BITS
If you are free this week/next week, I will recommend visiting the Jeanie Johnston famine ship (with kids if you got ‘em).
The history has a happy ending and it is worth a visit. If you go early, pop in to the Epic Museum too which is right next to the famine ship.
Jeanie Johnston is unfortunately not free, the adult ticket is 15eur, and students enter for 13eur.
Reply to this email if you get a chance, I appreciate reading all replies. Good Luck with everything today.
Thanks, Khalid.
