Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced that he will not stand in the next general election.
This decision, surprising many, follows a series of early retirements within his Fine Gael party. Varadkar will step down as party leader immediately but will remain as Taoiseach until his party’s conference in mid-April, allowing time for a successor to be chosen. He emphasized the need for new leadership to strengthen the party and government.
This announcement raises questions about the coalition government’s future, although the next general election is required by early 2025.
A significant decline in Ireland’s rental market saw over 20,000 tenancies lost last year as landlords increasingly exit the market.
This trend, driven by a combination of regulatory pressures and economic challenges, has exacerbated the housing crisis. Many landlords cite burdensome regulations and rising costs as key factors for leaving the rental sector.
This exodus contributes to the dwindling supply of rental properties, intensifying competition and driving up rents for tenants. The government faces mounting pressure to address these issues and stabilize the rental market to prevent further deterioration of housing availability and affordability.

Dublin Port's sniffer dog, Elvis, has been recognized for his exceptional service in detecting drugs, after retiring yesterday.
Elvis, a Springer Spaniel, and his handler, Officer Philip Doyle, have been instrumental in several high-profile drug busts. Trained by the Revenue Commissioners, Elvis can detect a variety of drugs, playing a crucial role in national security.
His keen sense of smell and diligent work have led to numerous successful interceptions of illegal substances. The team’s efforts significantly contribute to the fight against drug trafficking, ensuring the safety and security of Dublin and Ireland.
